High Schoolers To Participate In Nic Jazz Clinics

High schoolers to participate in NIC jazz clinics, annual concert features special guests.


Who: The North Idaho College Jazz Ensemble
What: presents JazzNIC, an evening of jazz sponsored by the Associated Students of NIC and the Nickel's Worth,
When: at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2

It's not uncommon for audience members to be dancing in the aisles during the North Idaho College Jazz Ensemble's performance of JazzNIC.

"This annual concert is known for being high-energy with a great mix of toe-tapping tunes," said NIC Band Director Terry Jones.

JazzNIC comprises three days of jazz clinics Feb. 1-3, which include students from 28 high school and middle school jazz groups from across the region.

Several special guests from music programs across the region will lead the clinics and participate in the concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2 in Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center. Three special guests will lead the clinics and participate in the finale concert. University of Idaho professor Dan Bukvich, who is also an internationally-known composer whose works have been performed at the Lincoln Center and the Vatican. University of Idaho professor and band conductor Alan Gemberling is well-known throughout the region as a performer. Lewiston High School band director Gary Gemberling is a former Idaho Music Educators Association president and an acclaimed performer, including performances as a soloist with the Spokane Symphony. The clinicians will be featured soloists and performers during several pieces performed with the NIC Jazz Ensemble.

The band will perform the Duke Ellington tune "Happy-Go-Lucky-Local," featuring soloists throughout the band. Ellington's "Blue Cellophane" and Jenny Kellogg's "25 or 6 to 4" will feature Al Gemberling on trombone. The William Russo piece "Portrait of a Count" will feature Gary Gemberling on trumpet and he will provide the vocals for the John Clayton arrangement of "Smack Dab in the Middle." Bukvich will be featured on vibes during the performance of his own arrangement of "Star Dust." Each of the guests will perform with the NIC Jazz Ensemble during Gordon Goodwin's "Sing Sang Sung" as the concert finale.

The NIC Jazz Ensemble is directed by Jones and includes Tim Wood, Joel Sandford, Alex Carr, David Mills, Luke Morfitt, Tim Sandford, Matt Barkley, Russell Coler, Johnny Mueller, David Cooper, Pete Obligato, Phil Aarhus, Shayler Slothower, George Conrad, Lane Sumner, Jim Lien and Daniel Cox.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The public is also welcome to attend the jazz clinics. Groups will perform every hour on the hour beginning at 8 a.m. Feb. 1-3 in Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

The JazzNIC concert is sponsored by the Associated Students of NIC (ASNIC) and the clinics are sponsored by the Nickel's Worth.
