Art Around Town



      

Art by local and regional artists is on display year-round at several locations throughout Sandpoint and Sagle. The Pend Oreille Arts Council coordinates exhibits at several locations currently on display, through November 14, 2005.

POAC Gallery at the Power House is located at 120 Lake St., in Sandpoint, ID. The Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

The third annual show of its kind, “POAC’s Own,” exhibits artwork made by nearly 50 artists in this community who are members of the Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC). Some of the unique treasures include sculpture by Mark Heisel, wood sculpture by Barry Barush, paintings by artists including Michael Pinchera, Katherine Haynes, Catherine Earle, Barbara Field, Karoli Carhart, Catherine Clark and several new member artists. An array of works including paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry, woodworking, dolls, quilts and ceramics are on display. “POAC’s Own” is sponsored by Eklektos Gallery and Design Center.

University of Idaho Extension Office, located at 4205 N. Boyer in Sandpoint, ID, is open from 9-12 and 1-5, Monday through Friday. The Extension Office is displaying Gretchen Albrecht-Hellar’s watercolor.

Gretchen has exhibited watercolors, mixed media paintings and collages with the Pend Oreille Arts Council for the past few years, and her work sells quickly. “Some things in life show their true beauty when we keep our interference to a minimum,” states the artist.

Sandpoint City Hall, located at 1123 Lake St., in Sandpoint, ID, is open 9-5 Monday through Friday. City Hall is displaying Dorothy Modafferi’s watercolor.

A native of Long Beach, California, Dorothy has been painting in oils and drawing since childhood. She was a founding member of Gallery Vista/Carlsbad Village Faire Gallery in California, an active member of San Diego Watercolor Society, and the Vice President of Visual Arts for the Pend Oreille Arts Council for several years. She is currently a volunteer with “Art for the Soul” at Bonner General Hospital, a member of the Idaho Watercolor Society and Northwest Watercolor Society in Washington, the Hope Garden Club, and the Idaho Native Plant Society. She has exhibited works throughout the US, England, France and Japan, in addition to at ArtWorks Gallery in Sandpoint.

Northern Lights, Inc., located at 421 Chevy Rd., off Hwy 95, in Sagle, ID, is open 8-5, Monday through Friday. Northern Lights is displaying on their walls, watercolor by Karoli Carhart, and in cases colored pencil on wood and pottery by Whitney Davison.

Karoli is not just a painter. Her career began as a fashion illustrator for Neiman Marcus in Dallas, then as a designer/commercial illustrator for J. Walter Thompson Advertising in San Francisco, where she won her first awards in the Communication Arts. She taught private art lessons, which led her to become a painter. If you go to the Hana Cultural Museum in Hawaii, you might see one of Karoli’s watercolor portraits. She is active in the arts community in Hawaii and in Sandpoint. “The world has educated me from Little Rock (where she was born) to Bangkok,” she states. Presently, Karoli dedicates her time to her creativity. "I find inspiration in many forms and in many places. The gift of Nature here in the Northwest gives me spiritual strength, truth, love, beauty, and an abundance of visual stories" says Karoli.

A native of Long Beach, Whitney Davison attended the California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA prior to landing in Sandpoint. Whitney explores both ceramics and colored pencil on wood, creating landscape imagery with the grain of the wood. Having participated in the Pend Oreille Arts Council’s Artwalk for the past few years, Whitney is also the Manager of the Everyday Internet Café at the Cedar Street Station in Sandpoint.

Bonner County Commissioners’ Office at the County Courthouse, located on First Avenue in Sandpoint, ID, is open 9-5, Monday through Friday. The Commissioner’s Office is displaying photography Jacqueline Charlebois.

Living on the East Coast most of her life, Jackie made her living as a makeup artist an esthetician in Florida spas. After branching out on her own, she began working with more photographers and modeling agencies. In her free time she captured photos of children and daily life with new perspective. Jackie lives in the Sagle area with her husband and two children. Her best reward is being able to touch someone’s heart through a photo. Her website is Jax Creations.

US Bank, located at 201 Main St., in Sandpoint. ID, is open 9:30-5, Monday through Thursday and 9:30-6 on Friday. US Bank is displaying acrylic art by Douglas Roe.

Douglas Roe paints wildlife from his many excursions into the northern Idaho wilderness. His work is primarily produced in the studio, although he enjoys the challenges of Plein-Air painting. He has been painting for over 30 years, and illustrated aerospace interiors for a designing and consulting firm in the Seattle area.

Ivano’s Ristorante, located 102 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint, ID, their Caffe is open from 10:30-2:30 Monday-Friday and the Ristorante is open from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Monday-Sunday. Ivano's is displaying graphite art by Doug Fluckiger.

Sandpoint resident Douglas Fluckiger has feasted for years on the area's exuberant beauty. He is locally employed as a graphic designer but has enjoyed drawing ever since he could hold a pencil. His drawings explore the design ubiquitous in nature-design which is emphasized by graphite's rich, pianoforte tones. Mr. Fluckiger studied art at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, and in 1996 graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In addition to drawing and design, Mr. Fluckiger enjoys his wife and family (he has four daughters), active church service, reading, music, and time spent outdoors in the paradise where he lives.

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, Sept. 30, 5-8 pm
Swan’s, located at 41 Lakeshore Dr. in Sagle, ID, is open Mon-Sat 11:30-9 p.m., but closed Tuesday and open Sunday 9 to 9. The opening reception displaying watercolor and oil art by Valerie Woelk, takes place Friday, Sept. 30, 5-8 p.m.

Valerie began winning awards in art in high school. In addition to raising a family, working in the concrete industry, and studying graphic design, Valerie has painted and sketched as an “after-work” activity. Her bright colors reflect her upbringing in Colorado and Hawaii, and her subject matter launches your imagination into stories. Valerie’s website is Shapely Forms.
