Chamber President Jack Douglas Presents Thanks to Cassandra Rutherford-Eckerb

At the April monthly meeting, held April 26, 2007, at the Chic 'n Chop restaurant in Bonners Ferry, the Chamber of Commerce paid tribute to Cassandra Rutherford-Eckberg. Cassandra recently retired after several years as a board member. During that time, she served as Vice-President.

Cassandra Rutherford-Eckberg worked on many projects that helped bring new life to the Chamber. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Mother of All yard Sales, which has become an annual summer event that brings people into the county to purchase from local yard sales.

Cassandra Rutherford-Eckberg came up with the idea for the Bonners Ferry Chamber Members Guide, and then worked hard to make it happen. Chamber President Jack Douglas lauded her for such efforts, saying: "Cassandra always brought new ideas and lots of enthusiasm to her efforts for the Chamber. The members guide is just one good example. She willed it into being and then created a guide, where none had existed before. A lot of people don't realize that she spent many hours contacting local businesses to secure the information for the guide. All of that effort was volunteer work."

Cassandra Rutherford-Eckberg also helped secure $1,800 in match dollars for advertising for the Chamber, which was used for the yard sale. She also played a large role in the development of the Welcome Wagon program. That program is active again this spring. Douglas said that Cassandra was a hard worker who helped get that idea off the ground and then took the time to help greet the new businesses.

Douglas said she also did some of the mundane, less glamorous chores for the Chamber, such as attending meetings no one else could attend. Perhaps her biggest single contribution may have been keeping the Bonners Ferry Visitors Center open for months, with little help other than a couple of part-time volunteers. Douglas said: "She was our face to the outsider world for a while, responding to phone calls and e-mails from out of the area, and always championing Boundary County and what we have to offer. She also communicated for the Chamber with neighboring chambers and attended the monthly NITA meetings in Coeur d' Alene, when no one else could get time off to go. All of that was volunteer work for which she received no pay."

"We will miss the many good things Cassandra brought to the table. She rarely turned down a request to help and she put a lot of energy into the things she did. In many ways, the Chamber will find her slot hard to fill. People will also see that she did a lot of the work that no one else was willing to volunteer for and that her efforts are bearing fruit for the Chamber currently. We will feel the positive effect of her positive attitude and her long hours of devoted duty to the community for years to come," Douglas said.

In other Chamber news, at the monthly meeting, the Chamber heard from Jack Douglas about the Visitor Center, the planned Duck Race this August and efforts to have another excellent community yard sale.

The Chamber of Commerce has met twice with the Bonners Ferry City Council to discuss the plans for the Visitors Center. A decision from the City is expected soon.
