North Idaho College student Mario Barrientos of Colombia recently received the prestigious Toni Robideaux Scholarship from the Spokane Advertising Federation.
Barrientos, a graphic design major, was chosen as the recipient of the award in the graphic design category, which includes entries from both two-year colleges and four-year universities throughout the region. His award submission included a class project to design marketing materials for a cologne product.
"I saw this as a great opportunity to show some of the region's top industry professionals what I can do," Barrientos said.
Barrientos was presented the $1,000 scholarship award at the Addy Award reception March 6 at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane.
The Toni M. Robideaux Scholarship Fund, established in honor of Robideaux's contributions to advertising, art and design, recognizes student achievement and excellence in advertising arts.
"This award means a lot to people in the industry," NIC Graphic Design Instructor Philippe Valle said. "NIC graphic design students have won the prestigious Toni Robideaux scholarship for the fourth time in the past six years."
Barrientos other honors include second place in video production team and third place in graphics design promotion at a recent Business Professionals of America state competition, qualifying for the 2009 BPA National Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas May 6-10.
He also designed the logo for the new Police Officer Standards and Training Academy in Coeur d'Alene, a financial aid logo for the State of Idaho and the program cover for a recent Western Business Education Association conference.
